Fun Everyday Activities To Help Toddlers Improve Literacy Skills

Activities like singing, talking and storytelling can help to develop the literacy skills of toddlers. It can even make it easier for them to learn how to read and write. Parents only need to allocate a few 5-minute sessions for literacy activities every day and, soon, they will begin to see dramatic improvements.

Keeping that in mind, here are some fun everydayactivities that you can doto help your toddler improve their literacy skills:

Talking And Singing- these activities are quite easy to do. Children can develop their speaking and listening skills. Use rhymes when singing to introduce children to the creative use of words. Before mealtimes, explain to children the dishes you are preparing, what it looks like, how it tastes and how it’s cooked. This shows to children how to verbally explain things. Talk about things outside the house, like traffic, the sounds of birds and the rustling of leaves. Ask children whether they can make the sounds of cars, trains, airplanes, water, rain and wind. Repeatedly sing nursery rhymes and ask children to sing along.

Storytelling- although toddlers don’t know how to read yet, reading with them can improve their listening skills, vocabulary and their ability to associate words with sounds. Choose books that have repetition, rhythm and rhyme in the storyline. Use your finger to guide the eyes of your children to the words that you are reading. Point out certain phrases or keywords. Tell children to turn the pages. Choose lift-to-flap or pop-up story books, so children can look and touch at the objects.

Playing With Colourful ABC Toys- although it’s not yet the time to teach toddlers how to read and write, you should let them play with ABC toys first. This will familiarise them with the shapes of letters and numbers. When it’s finally time to learn how to read and write, your children are already familiar with the alphabet. This will significantly speed up the learning process. It is also a good idea to ask children to make the shape of letters and numbers using playdough.
